Monday Mania – 5.16.2016

Welcome to another week of Monday Mania!

I’m starting this week out with an interesting idea that I have been tossing around in my head for a long time.

I have been a guest on a couple of podcasts but I really would like to start one of my own. The thing that has been stopping me is the fact that I would like it to be interactive, meaning at least having one other person to discuss topics with. I would even love it if it became a round table type discussion.

That said, I have no candidates in mind so I would like to open up this opportunity to you all. As readers of the blog here, you probably have a bit of an idea of what I am about. My vision is to do a podcast that is an hour or less, once a week. We can record at a mutually beneficial time (hopefully) like the evening or weekend. I’m game either way!

If I seem like someone you could work with, and this seems like something that you are potentially interested in, please shoot me an email at tom@thepreparedninja.com with the subject “podcast.”

As far as the last week has been, it seems like we are spending a lot of time at my house just trying to get by. It is almost like we never really gain any ground because we are always just spinning our wheels trying to keep up with today.

When the opportunity presents itself, I am determined to adjust my lifestyle to live more intentionally. Instead of living to work, I want to work to live. As long as my basic needs are met and I have a secure foothold on life, why is there a need to do more at work? Unless I am working on my own project, why would I continue to put my health, my family, etc. on the line?

That sounds good right? We will see what happens but I know that I can make it happen. It’s just a matter of how soon I can do so.

Thank you all for your support! I appreciate all of you who continue to read and show an interest in what I do. Even if it is only once in a blue moon. More than anything, I hope that my work at least helps someone become more prepared for a difficult time.

I hope y’all have a blessed week!

-Tom

Your Doctor…Friend or Foe?

Everyone hopes that when they visit the doctor that they leave in a better state then when they arrived or at least have a plan to achieve a condition of better health. This is a reasonable expectation. It is also expected that conversations between a healthcare provider and their patient will be held in confidence as guaranteed by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. I understand the medical necessity to inquire about certain social habits. The amount of alcohol that a patient consumes or tobacco that they use can have a direct impact on their health and could even be the exact cause for certain medical problems. No one expects that their physician will be a spy for the government and have an agenda outside of the patients chief complaint.

This is exactly what some of the 23 Executive Actions that President Obama signed into law will see to if the President has his way. Let me be clear, my doctor asking me about whether I own firearms or not is not going to have even the slightest impact on what is causing my chronic cough. This is a separate issue from those suffering from mental illness. If there is a patient that presents with mental illness and verbalizes threats or acts in a threatening manner it presents a different set of circumstances and at that point it seems prudent that the doctor may incur an obligation to report a credible threat. What the recent Executive Actions are encouraging include:

1. Protect the rights of health care providers to talk to their patients about gun safety: Doctors and other health care providers also need to be able to ask about firearms in their patients’ homes and safe storage of those firearms, especially if their patients show signs of certain mental illnesses or if they have a young child or mentally ill family member at home. Some have incorrectly claimed that language in the Affordable Care Act prohibits doctors from asking their patients about guns and gun safety. Medical groups also continue to fight against state laws attempting to ban doctors from asking these questions. The Administration will issue guidance clarifying that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit or otherwise regulate communication between doctors and patients, including about firearms.

2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.

3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.

4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.

What seems likely to result from this in my opinion:

1. Physicians, Medical Groups, Hospitals, etc. will start to implement gun owner questionnaires into their patient screening processes. Further down the road, ObamaCare funding could even be limited based on inclusion of this questioning during patient visits. This leaves patients in the predicament of either answering questions unwillingly or being forced to lie to their healthcare providers to protect their individual freedoms that are supposed to be guaranteed by the Constitution.

2. There are not currently any “unnecessary legal barriers” in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. The President wants your medical information to be disclosed when you want to purchase a firearm. The HIPAA laws state that:

  • Health providers and health plans, INCLUDING government programs that pay for health care must comply with HIPAA laws.
  • The information protected includes information health care providers put in your medical record, conversations your doctor has about your health care with others, information about you in your health insurer’s computer system, billing information about you at your clinic, and most other health information about you held by those who must follow these laws.
  • Covered entities must put in place safeguards to protect your health information and must reasonably limit uses and disclosures to the minimum necessary to accomplish their intended purpose.
  • The HIPAA Privacy Rule sets rules and limits on who can look at and receive your health information. To make sure that your health information is protected in a way that does not interfere with your health care, your information can be used and shared:
  1. For your treatment and care coordination.
  2. To pay doctors and hospitals for your health care and to help run their businesses.
  3. With your family, relatives, friends, or others you identify who are involved with your health care or your health care bills, unless you object.
  4. To make sure doctors give good care and nursing homes are clean and safe.
  5. To protect the public’s health, such as by reporting when the flu is in your area.
  6. To make required reports to the police, such as reporting gunshot wounds.
  • Your health information cannot be used or shared without your written permission unless this law allows it. For example, without your authorization, your provider generally cannot:
  1. Give your information to your employer.
  2. Use or share your information for marketing or advertising purposes.
  3. Share private notes about your health care.

Seems like a whole bunch of reasons to not share your medical information when you go to purchase a firearm.

3. Uncle Sugar, uh I mean Uncle Sam is going to offer a lot of money to states that are willing to do what he wants!

4. The AG will look at who else might be a good candidate to ban from owning guns. Maybe so that felons and those with convictions for domestic violence don’t feel so alone, military veterans and those who speak out about individual liberty and freedom will likely be added to the list of those who cannot possess a firearm.

I wouldn’t go so far as being paranoid but at the same time I would not make it a habit to tell your life story to the dude that you just met at the bus stop. At least take the time and consider if the questions that your doctor is asking you are actually pertinent to your medical care and if your healthcare provider is on your side.

Don’t worry…now that our doctors are against us, our kids will be next.

Eight Things to Consider Prior to November 6th

The next two months are a questionable time for the United States. The general election in November will make some Americans happy and will also upset many Americans, regardless of who wins. What is absolute is that the upcoming Presidential election will change America for the good, the bad, or otherwise. In light of the chaos, implications, theories, conspiracies, rumors, truths, or lies there are some things that absolutely must be considered. Take a look at these eight areas:

1. Consider Purchasing Firearms  – It seems safe to assume that with the highly publicized shootings that have occurred this year, if President Obama gets re-elected, there will likely be a big push to outlaw certain types of firearms on more than a state level. It seems that it could be possible, if not probable.

2. Stockpile Ammunition (There May Be Legislation Limiting Types/Quantities of Ammunition) – There is nationwide fear that the government may go after American’s ability to purchase ammunition as an alternate or perhaps even an additional means of gun control. By stockpiling ammunition now, you have the ability to avoid this possibility and even if restrictions do not come along, it is likely that ammunition prices are likely to go up regardless of who gets elected.

3. Diversify Investments – Obtain precious metals while they are easily accessible and able to be purchased. The government has interfered with private citizens and our ability to purchase or even hold certain quantities of precious metals in the past. Now would be a good time to make these purchases before restrictions come along. It is possible that the future could  also bring a registry or other means of tracking who is holding precious metals so making these purchases now will avoid this possibility.

4. Calculate water storage needs and stockpile all necessary water for you, your loved ones, and anyone else who may be reliant upon you for their survival. Recent government interference in Oregon has resulted in individual citizens without water rights on their own property.

5. Determine the appropriate amount of long-term food storage needed for you, your loved ones, and anyone else who may be reliant upon you for their survival. It seems likely that there will be limits imposed on the amount of supplies that can be stockpiled by one family or in one residence. The recent introduction of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) includes wording that determines that citizens who participate in the act of storing food or medical supplies could possibly be terrorists. Just to be clear, this does include Americans.

6. If you have the ability to keep cash on hand, do so. If there is a run on the banks as a result of concerns about the economy or banking system, it could be impossible to get access to any cash. During this same period of time, it is likely that credit and debit cards will be worthless because business owners will realize that if the banks are not giving customers their own cash that they will not likely give businesses the money either.

7. Build a medical kit for your home, car, office, bug out location, camper, and any other location that you determine to be necessary. The country is in a volatile state right now and part of being able to deal with this is having the ability to handle a medical emergency. Don’t forget that a medical kit is almost worthless without the proper training on how to use the contents of the kit.

8. With the full-scale implementation of “Obamascare” on the way, I feel that it is imperative that every single American gets a complete copy of their medical records. My prediction is that the introduction of socialized medicine to the United States will cause several doctors to either retire, go into a different line of work, or close their private practice and go somewhere else. Any one of these options will increase the chances that medical records will be lost and is records are lost the process for any medical treatment would need to be started over…if it is even allowed under Obamacare.

These are a few things that I could think of that warrant serious consideration by everyone over the next two months. I feel that the elections will drastically chance the direction of the country. I am hoping for the better. Please add a comment if there is something that you can think of that should be added to the list of things that must be done before the sixth of November!

Top 10 Motivations to Fire 99% of U.S. Politicians

I don’t know about how all of you are feeling these days about the political situation in these United States of America but I am worried. I am worried about what the future holds. I am worried about what my kids and grandkids will be forced to deal with some day. Most of all I am worried that we can’t continue to be the great country that we are if things do not get turned around. So here is the top ten reasons that I could think of to fire 99% of America’s politicians:

1. The Socialist Agenda – Obamacare…that is about as socialist as it gets but there is a growing shift towards socialism in America and it is coming from the top!

2. The Economy – The economic situation is in the crapper and the clowns on Capitol Hill are fixing it by continually voting to raise the debt ceiling. Really?!?! How is taking on more debt going to make the economy better? Everyone that manages or even halfway tries to manage their personal finances knows that you can’t make any forward progress with debt by taking on any more.

3. Unemployment – The Recovery and Reinvestment of 2009 has yet to lead the nation on any road to recovery and the jobs just aren’t there. Just ask that shift manager at McDonald’s that is hoping to pick up an extra shift because he still owes $80,000 on his school loans. And since everyone working for minimum wage has a college degree, guess where everyone else is working? They are not! We can also add the fact that the President is having U.S., job producing companies like Gibson guitars raided and shut down while he tries to distract the American people with some Presidential prestidigitation to keep our eyes off of what is really going on.

4. Taxes – These days taxes seem to be the answer for everything. Municipalities don’t have enough money? Raise taxes or institute new ones! The government spends our tax dollars to subsidize the corn farmers, then the corn gets turned into corn syrup, and the government wants to tax us on drinks like soda that contain these same corn sugars! Why is our government spending our tax dollars to subsidize things that they want to tax us on? Or why is the ammunition tax included in the price of ammunition which I have to pay tax on? This is paying taxes on taxes and it is ok because the government is driving the train!

5. Gas Prices – I am thinking this one is self-explanatory but it kind of comes down to the fact that we are still depending on oil from countries that we are only friendly with because we need their oil. There is oil under our country and if oil is not the answer then we need to figure out what the answer is going to be.

6. Eliminating Freedom – The government is stripping away our freedoms more and more every day. This is evidenced by actions such as those taken by the VIPR teams that are acting in America’s “best interests” by pulling over families randomly as they travel on the interstate system.

7. Vanishing Liberties – Anybody flown lately? I don’t think that I should have to be scanned or groped so that I can go visit someone or some place. The DHS and TSA is not making significant strides in securing our country but they are making significant strides in keeping law-abiding citizens from being able to enjoy our existence.

8. Lobbyists – There are over 12,000 lobbyists in Washington, D.C. that are there to persuade our “representatives” to spend tax dollars on special interests that include weapon systems, healthcare, defending tobacco use, and what color Rihanna should dye her hair next, but why is there no one standing up for the American people? If politicians don’t kick the lobbyists out of Washington, then the politicians should be kicked out of Washington!

9. Entitlements – Just because someone gets elected to be a civil servant does not mean that this same person should be entitled to things like insider trading and defense contracts as they are on their way out the door. If it is illegal for everyone else then it should be illegal for everyone…period!

10. They are all crooks! Just about every politician in America should be in the same cell block as Rod Blagojevich right now. No Congressman with the same last name as the body part that you resigned over should receive any long-term benefits from a single term of questionable service for the American people.

That is my two cents!

Just to add one bonus point…there should be strict term limits. The political system in our country was not established to be a career for someone. It is a public service. When the country started, politicians were summoned from their regular jobs to go to Congress. It should still be the same way.

Remarks complete.
